At least 2.3 m. Ideally the blades sit about 2.1 m above the floor: that gives the best air movement without getting in the way.

Is it really silent?

Yes. Under 22 dB in use, the level of a whisper. At low speed you forget it's there, even at night. Measured at 1.5 m, speed 3 of 6, ±2 dB tolerance depending on the room.

Why keep it on in winter?

Reverse mode pushes the warm air trapped at the ceiling back down. You heat less for the same comfort.
